Tachileik Burma
Tachileik is connected to Kengtung (106 KM north) and then Yunnan China by highway AH2. There are two bridges that provide access between Mae Sai and Tachilek, one is actively used for border crossings and the other newer is to handle the potential huge flow of goods into Thailand from China. Recently the dry season lowered the Meh Kong river flow to prevent the river boat barges from running ... daily truck loads crossing at the Tachileik border crossings surged from 50/day to 700/day.

Hotels & Guesthouses in Tachileik
There are a few accomodations but Tachileik is the worst half of these twin sister towns. Our advise is to stay in Mae Sai or continue into the countryside of Burma for your stay.
Border Crossing Tachileik
When you cross into People's Republic of Myanmar you will pay in USD a few for a "temporary entry permit" ... 99% of the people enter into Tachileik just to do a border crossing stamp (for Thia Visa purposes) or shopping. The very few that travel onward will have to deal with the fact that the Myanmar Customs House in Tachileik is holding thier passport. You get it back when you checkout back into Thailand, but you can wander around north Burma for 14 days.
*Historical note ... King Mangrai (r.1261-1296) was the 25th King of Ngoen Yang and the first King of Chiang Mai of the Lanna Kingdom (1296-1558) ... Kings of Ngoen Yang hailed from Kengtung Burma and fought off Mongol invasions to maintain the estates of the LannaThai Kingdom.
